I am not sure what the real reason is why I like Pretoria. Is it because it reminds me of the Kruger National Park where you see exotic birds and trees everywhere and sleep in a rest camp (in Pretoria it is called your suburb) behind electric fences with the wilderness outside? Or is it the great weather or having the luxuries of a city while still having a more town-like feeling to it - some people from Pretoria still say they are going to the “dorp” (village) for shopping! Or is it because it is called the jacaranda city?…

2023 Spring Tour

Usually we plan our roadtrips a long time ahead. This one was decided upon 6 days before we departed. We had some good times in Gauteng, did a work trip to Kruger and then did KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape on the way back. Come and enjoy South Africa with us!

2022 Spring Tour

This year we did another trip to the Kruger National Park. We did not intend to visit this soon again after last year, but I have joined the SANParks Honorary Rangers since then, and this year was a golden opportunity to attend their annual Indaba in Skukuza. We also visited my son in Pretoria and joined some friends, on our way to the Kruger, at the Pyramid Airfield near Barberton. The Messerschmitt jet fighter swoops down from nowhere to attack the Spitfire fighter but the latter is not fazed and engages the Messerschmitt in a dog-fight. Meanwhile, the Mosquito bomber carries on undisturbed towards its target. A little while later a Ratel armoured vehicle and a G6 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer, both VERY impressive South African war machines, grab my imagination both as engineer and military enthusiast.
