COVID-19 tried, but it couldn’t prevent us from making a road trip this winter. We had a plan to celebrate my sixtieth birthday in the Kruger National Park, but the pandemic prevented all inter-provincial travel and we had to change our plans at short notice. So we had to stick to the Western Cape, and this gave me and Anette the ideal opportunity to do some roads most people do not have the time for and that we have not done before ourselves.
We took back roads via the Klein-Karoo to visit Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve near Touws River/Montaqu, and we approaced Barrydale from a completely new angle. We stayed at the Red Stone Hills Guest Farm near Calitzdorp – something we have wanted to do for some time, and from there drove gravel road all the way to De Rust. We made an even longer visit to Klaarstroom this time, saw lots of snow, and even did the Prince Alfred Pass between Uniondale and Knysna. We went to see Karatera and Rheenendal and slept over at our old favourites Mossel Bay and Hartenbos. On our way back home we also did the gravel road between Riviersonderend via Greyton to Villiersdorp.
This trip made for some great pictures, finding hidden gems and meeting very interesting people. Join me and Anette and get lost with us in the beauty of South Africa…
